Core values lie at the heart of every business. For more than 50 years, the Cavender family’s values of hard work, common sense, authentic merchandise and excellent customer service have guided its Western store business.
Founded in Pittsburg, Texas, by James and Patricia Cavender in 1965, Cavender’s Western Store remains family-owned and -operated years later. Joe Cavender, president of the company and James and Pat’s oldest son, still personally buys the bulk of the boots found on shelves and online. Youngest son Clay developed the Rafter C brand of hats and shirts and — along with Pat — plans the layout and décor for each new store; middle brother Mike travels across the United States finding and brokering arrangements for new locations.
Family members and store associates alike pride themselves on understanding the products they carry. The Cavender family owns several East Texas cattle ranches, giving them the opportunity to test every product sold. “Pretty much everything you see in our stores has at least been seen by my eyes or touched by my hands, or both,” Clay says. “I still love to see customers come through the doors for the first time and enjoy all the hard work our people put in to get a store open.”
