NRF Center for Digital Risk & Innovation

Cybersecurity and Fraud Prevention Focus Area

The NRF Center for Digital Risk & Innovation serves as a hub for NRF’s work on best practices and policy engagement related to cybersecurity and fraud prevention. Through the Center, NRF develops thought leadership that informs retailers’ efforts to combat cyber threats and prevent fraud and provides policymakers with context on the retail industry’s efforts to protect their businesses and consumers against these threats.

The Center will produce and release reports on cybersecurity and fraud prevention issues and convene regular webinars and meetings to share perspectives. In the coming months, NRF will release a survey report on consumer perceptions of retailers’ fraud prevention measures and is developing a cybersecurity resource guide to help small retailers identify free or low-cost resources to improve their cybersecurity.

A guide to developing a retail supply chain cybersecurity risk management plan

Developed in collaboration with The Chertoff Group, this guide identifies supply chain-related cybersecurity risks and offers a framework and practices that can enable retailers to proactively address cybersecurity risks with partners.

Retail Fraud Taxonomy

NRF’s Retail Fraud Taxonomy White Paper is a knowledge base of retail theft, fraud and abuse techniques derived from real-world observations, aimed at enhancing the community's ability to define, understand, prepare for, mitigate, and detect fraud. By categorizing techniques and related countermeasures, the Retail Fraud Taxonomy serves as an effective tool for education, communication, security assessments, team exercises, and resource prioritization.

How to engage

The Center’s work on cybersecurity and fraud prevention issues will be guided by the Center’s Executive Advisory Committee and a Cybersecurity and Fraud Prevention Steering Committee. This steering committee will include cybersecurity and fraud prevention leaders from NRF retail member companies and key industry partners.

Many of the activities of the Center will be conducted via two existing NRF councils. The NRF IT Security Council is NRF’s group for retail chief information security officers and other senior-level retail security leaders. The NRF Fraud Prevention Professionals Working Group convenes senior-level fraud prevention leaders from retail companies to discuss current fraud risks and best practices to address them. Both of these groups hold regular virtual and in-person meetings, including at Retail’s Big Show and NRF PROTECT
